‘Eternal Mongolia’: Harnessing the Power of Conservation to Create a Sustainable Future

With a vision to protect 30% of lands as National Protected Areas (NPAs), the Government of Mongolia announced the launch of Eternal Mongolia – a Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative that will deliver lasting conservation and sustainable community development for the country.

Eternal Mongolia is an initiative of Enduring Earth, an ambitious collaboration between The Nature Conservancy (TNC), The Pew Charitable Trusts, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and ZOMALAB that works in partnership with nations and communities as they accelerate and amplify conservation for a more sustainable, prosperous future for people and planet. Eternal Mongolia will ensure the community-based conservation of vast natural areas including the planet’s last intact temperate grassland. It will unlock USD 198 million of new investments and policy commitments over 15 years needed for the country to ensure its 30% conservation target will be met by 2030 while providing a secure and economic future for Mongolians.

Lorinet Foundation is proud to support this initiative, which aligns with our commitment to promoting sustainable development and improving the well-being of children and youth in Mongolia. With Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) and youth employment being our thematic priorities, we recognise the interconnectedness of environmental conservation with these themes and its profound impact on the lives of young people. Climate change poses a serious threat to humanity, particularly to young children who are among the most vulnerable to its effects.

The Eternal Mongolia initiative represents a crucial step towards addressing these challenges. Besides the goals of New Protections and Effective Management of National Protected Areas, the initiative commits to building large-scale capacity for community-based conservation by, for, and with local communities and promoting sustainable livelihoods and income streams. By supporting conservation efforts that prioritise both environmental preservation and community development, this initiative not only safeguards Mongolia’s natural heritage but also fosters sustainable livelihoods and economic opportunities for its people.
